I think this is likely a good move... it will create more heated conversation and controversy. It's like American Idol. People don't honestly tune in to hear amateur singers poorly belt out their favorite Barry Manilow tunes, do they? I mean - if the idol comes from your home town... then MAYBE. But for the majority of viewers, they tune in for one reason and one reason alone... to see Simon Cowell rip apart the mediocre talent.

Phil Hellmuth will bring that same feeling to Celebrity Poker Showdown. It likely won't be the same high-level ripping that Cowell has perfected, but expect to see Hellmuth's smarmy, irritating behaviour make itself evident early on.

James Woods Blog on Hollywood Poker

With this blog I do my best to keep you up-to-date about all the latest happenings in the world of celebrity poker. Well, I came across another blog that does a way better job at this task than I can do.

Hollywood Poker now has blogs written by James Woods ( the celebrity poker king) and Vince Van Patten. After reading through these blogs I got a better understanding on both the world of poker and how the entertainment industry works.

The first James Woods Blog is about his month playing poker, and about his final showdown at the World Poker Tour L.A. Poker Classic. I don’t want to say too much more, it’s definitely worth reading yourself.

Vince Van Patten has a blog on the site as well. The Vince Van Patten blog has inside information about the WPT and he offers tips on how to improve your game.

So anyway to make a long story short, you should really do your best to check out these blogs.

You Gotta Know When Fold'em

I have heard to most important skills to have while playing poker is patience. It may sound like an easy thing to do, relax and only play hands you think you can win. This probably would be my biggest poker flaw, the inability to fold a medium hand.

The reason for this is boredom, it doesn’t matter if I am playing online poker or in a live game. I know what a good poker hand is and I know what a bad poker hand is, but it seems the more I fold the better the bad hands look.

I do have to agree with the point that patience is a poker player’s best friend. Eventually those endless muck hands will turn into good hands, hopefully that good hand will make you some money when you have it, to make up for all the lost blinds.

As great as this way of thinking is, you still have to be careful and try not to fold too much. Even with continuous bad hands you still need to call something, otherwise when you actually have the nuts everyone at the table will know not to call you.

I was having a poker discussion with friend the other day about calling cheap flops at the beginning with a bad poker hand. There is nothing with making these calls, you just don’t want to go overboard and call every hand, even if it’s just the minimum bet. You also have to accept when your hand is bad and get out of the pot. We all have stories of horrible hands turning into golden hands, but that’s the way playing a game of chance works.

Playing a Poker Pro

What is the key to being a great poker player? To be honest I really don’t think that there is one. Poker is luck, but a good poker player knows how the cards play out and can play accordingly to it.

There are a lot of people who brag that they are a great poker player, most of the bragging usually happens right before you sit at the same table with them. I have found that players who talk up how great they are usually are not that great of poker players. After all if you’re a good poker player wouldn’t you want your opponent to think that you’re a horrible player.

When sitting at the table with one of these on-the-fringe poker stars, they will usually talk a lot of smack and they will make big calls. These players are usually easy victims of the check-raise move and they will keep playing hard because they think they can take your chips, or think they can scare you away from the pot.

The easy way to beat these players is to let them steal blinds, let them build up their confidence and get your revenge when the stakes get higher.

I have found that most of the big-talking players out there simply just watch too much poker on television and think that they can play like pros, enjoy these players, because they can win you some money.

The World Of Poker Television

As a poker fan there is a lot of variety to choose from when it comes to watching poker on your television and trust me there is a lot more on the way. Here are some of the more interesting poker shows that may be coming to a television near you.

The Small Town Poker Tour

The Small Town Poker Tour will take viewers on a road trip across the country as they watch everyday people compete in smaller tournaments in their small towns. Producers are planning on covering a lot of areas in the United States and Canada, they are also thinking about going to Asia in the near future.

Play for Mike Tyson’s house

Self-made business man Dominic Marrocco recently purchased Mike Tyson’s old $4-million Las Vegas mansion. He plans on offering the bankrupt boxer a change to win his old house back in a poker match. Anyone interested in playing in the tournament are more than welcomed to play, if they can afford the expensive buy-in. Marrocco is currently working on a television deal for the show.

Annie Duke Takes On The World

The Game Show Network recently announced that they are working with female poker star Annie Duke on her own show, Annie Duke Takes On The World. The show will feature Duke offering poker tips to the viewers and will also include a game were viewers come on the show to play against Duke at poker.

Who I Would Like To Play Poker Against

There are a lot of celebrities I’d love to play poker against. Imagine the bragging rights that I would have if I sent someone like Ben Affleck away from the table empty handed. Anyways here is a list of different celebrities I would like to play poker against.

David Cross

I have seen David Cross play on a couple of celebrity events and he seems to be a fairly good player. Plus I am a huge fan of both Arrested Development and Mr. Show. Playing against someone like Cross would be fun, it would not really matter if I won or lost.

Shannon Elizabeth

I know this may sound completly shallow, but the main reason I would like to play Shannon Elizabeth would be the fact that, well she is Shannon Elizabeth. Besides being a very attractive opponent she seems to be a really good poker player. Over the last couple years she has done well in celebrity poker events and tournaments against poker pros.

James Woods

Who wouldn’t want to play poker against James Woods? He really looks like he is a good poker player. I think it would be funny to see his reaction when you raised him on a bad bluff. While playing him I would not be able to get that James Woods song from the Family Guy out of my head.

Homer Simpson

I know that he is not real, but imagine what it would be like to play poker against Homer Simpson. I think that he may surprise you and take a lot of your chips away, depending on how much Duff beer he is drinking. He would not be the smartest player I have ever squared up against, but probably the most entertaining.

Kramer

Imagine what it would be like to play against Kramer from Seinfeld. He definitely would enjoy smoking a cigar and some of the conversations you would have with him during the game would be interesting to say the least. I bet the game would probably end with Kramer somehow falling on the poker board and knocking chips everywhere.

The Game I Should Have Lost

I had probably the most interesting poker game of my life the other night. Basically it started out like any other poker game, I got schooled early and kept losing tricks. Still I kept calling big rises, even as my chip stack was pretty much reduced to a non-existent pile.

There were only two of us left in the game, I managed to stay alive by folding on everything. I had so few chips left, there was even consideration to just call the game, but then again I did have $20 on the line. I decided to keep playing and put in my big blind, this left me with one or two chips, so I went all in.

After that I played some of the most exciting and lucky poker that I have ever played in my entire life. I ended up doubling up a five times in a row, I just kept going all in and caught a lot of lucky river cards. A half hour had gone by and I had a stack that was becoming very similar to that of my opponent. It seemed the all-in raises were working and I kept following the winning pattern.

It got to the point where I actually claimed the chip lead in the game and I started to play smarter poker. During this time I managed to steal a lot of blinds by making big bets and that was also helping me rack up the chips.

Finally the end came, I got pocket aces and I made my usual all in call. At this point the person I was sitting across was starting to get rather upset and called me with his pocket jacks, he was probably thinking he had finally caught me.

Before that hand I had called him all in on nothing, in fact in reality I should have lost that game 10 times over, it was not my opponents fault, I simply kept having the best luck I had ever had in a game.

On the first flop a pair of kings and an ace came on the table, this gave me a full house and won me the game.

I am not writing this blog to brag, like I said this really did not have a lot to do with any form of poker skill, it was all just luck, with a couple good wagers. A lot of times when I play poker I lose a lot of chips I go into Kamikaze mode. I wait for that marginal hand to go all in on and officially lose the game of frustration. After that game I will play smart poker until I lose my very last chip.

To Drink Or Not To Drink?

Many would tell you that one of the most important ingredients of a poker game is beer. I really can’t see how alcohol would help your game.

With myself I have found if I have a couple drinks then it may actually help me more than not. I guess it just relaxes me and allows me to make better moves. On the other hand I have seen some great pokers loose a lot of chips at the expense of a too many drinks. I think you just get too confident in your play and make too many bad moves.

The worst person that you can play is the new poker player and even worse than that is a new player who has had a couple drinks. With that combination anything can really happen and trust me that’s not a good thing, you can loose a lot of chips fast. There is not really any structure to the game, because your opponent will not play a logical poker game, so imagine what happens when you add alcohol into the mix.

I’m not saying take away all the beer away from poker night, but I would probably recommend watching how much you drink if you are playing a real game, if you’re just playing for fun then it’s a really up to you.

The inspiration for this blog is a bad experience I had on New Year’s Eve at the poker table. I had a few too many drinks while playing poker and lost all my chips to a woman who drank more than me and never played poker before.

World Series of Poker Video Game

I’m not a huge video game person, but I friend of mine hooked me up with a copy of World Poker Tour for the Xbox and said I should write something about it. It did not take long for me to get hooked on it.

I created my own player and set him off into the world of poker to earn his poker stripes. I actually lost my very first game I played, which was a bit of a knock to my ego.

Once I got the hang of the game I made my character move through the world of poker and started to play against poker pros like Antonio "the Magician" Esfandiari, Erick Lindgren, Evelyn Ng, Lyle Berman, Michael "the Grinder" Mizrachi, and Phil "Unabomber" Laak.

I earned a lot of fake money during my rise to poker fame and fortune and spent it all on useless things like sunglasses.

I never got a chance to try the Xbox Live element of the game, but it’s suppose to be really good.

Overall I have to say I enjoy playing poker over the internet more than an Xbox, but it was still fun and would be a great way for someone to practice on their spare time.

Poker Night With The Guys From The Office

I played poker online for nearly six hours last night and I have to say that I am feeling the results of it today. There were a lot of coffee cups at my desk today.

Another interesting thing happened at work today, I found out that half the guys in the office play poker. After talking about the game for awhile we decided that we were going to have a poker night after work once a week to see who will gain the title of the best poker player in the office.

I’m in a bit of a dilemma, what if I get the chance to take my boss out of the game? Part of me would want to win the game, the other part of me would be debating whether it’s worth the risk of ticking off the guy that signs my paycheck every week.

I have failed to mention to guys that I am really into poker and that I even have a site and blog about poker that I look after on my spare time. If I manage to win the poker game I’m thinking they may not be too happy if they stumble across my site.

I can play poker against my buddies and people I don’t know on the internet, but it’s these people I work with everyday. I guess I’ll take them out to lunch if I manage to win.

Poker: A Game on the Rise

I started playing poker around 10 years ago and since then I have seen the game grow from an excuse to drink beer and smoke cigars with your buddies to a multimillion dollar industry.

It’s not that I’m complaining about it, but I can’t believe how popular poker has got. If you’re a good poker player and enter the right tournaments you could eventually became a celebrity, as popular as some up-and-coming movie star.

I can understand why poker is popular on television. It’s a lot like a game show, average people trying to win a crazy amount of money playing a game that you and I can play at home.

With the evolution of poker comes the armchair poker pros that seem to make their way to every poker game you play. I played against one recently at a party a friend of mine was hosting. He talked in detail about all the winnings he stole from some of the best players around, he also talked about all the offers some online poker sites and professional tournament wanting him to play for them. I know that I am not the world’s best poker player, I’m not even close, but I destroyed this guy at the table, he was one of the worst players I have ever seen.

He was the type of guy who would go all in every time he had something that resembled a decent hand. Of course most of the time people would not play him, but eventually I ended up taking his chips when he bet everything on pocket threes.

Anyway, what I am trying to say with this rant this week is poker is a game that has changed a lot over the last few years and it will be interesting to see how much further it will evolve over the future.

To Bluff or not to Bluff

To be honest with all of you, I am not the world’s biggest bluffer, from my experience constant bluffing is a way to lose a lot of chips and have a lot of early walks away from the poker table.

Now like most people I will sometimes bet more on a decent pair than I probably should just to scare people away, but that is as close as I usually come to stealing the pot.

A lot of people do bluff and it’s a skill that when used wisely can sometimes win you the big pot. From my experience the best way to win the pot by bluffing is to try to believe you have the hand you want people to think you have. If you have a full house and want people to think you have nothing, than try to act like you would if you had nothing, the same goes if you have a hand that should have been folded a long time ago.

You will lose money if you bluff all of the time, sure you will win the occasional pot and sometimes that pot could be big, but eventually people will catch on to the way you play. On the other hand, being a player who always bets on good hands and folds on weak hands will not get you very far either.

The key is to find the right mix of both extremes. There’s nothing wrong with folding on horrible hand and being a little aggressive on a hand that might not be the best on the table, that’s what makes poker a game of chance.

The best way to find out how far you should take a bluff is checking for a flop to see what your opponent bids, by letting him make the first move you may get an idea of what your up against.

Sound Like You Got the Nuts Even When You Play Like a Fish

I was talking to one of my friends yesterday and he told me I should put some rarely used poker terms up on the site. I did some research and came across some poker lingo that will make you sound like a poker pro even if you are a “fish”.

Bot

As you can probably guess bot is actually short for robot. This is a computer program that plays poker against human players with little or no human help.

Calling Station

This is a player who does not raise or fold very often and at the same time they always seem to call whatever comes out.

Chop

During a game when two players agree to take their blinds back on a hand that no one calls or raises, this is a chop.

Fish

Every poker players favorite kind of player. A fish is someone who does play well at all and loses all kinds of money. A common poker phrase is “Don't tap on the aquarium,” meaning let the fish players have fun and let them keep losing money.

Leak

A leak is a flaw in a poker player’s game that stops them from winning more money than they can.

Nuts

If someone has the Nuts they have the best possible hand on the table. Or they at least think they have the best hand.

Ragged

A Ragged flop is a card that gets turned up on the flop that does not appear to help anyone at the table.

Rock

A Rock is a person that plays by the book. They will fold when they have anything close to a bad hand and will raise you when they have a good hand. If you realize you are playing against a Rock do not match a raise unless you have the nuts.

Toke

This is a small tip given to the dealer after you win a hand. Most likely I will be spending that night going to a friend’s and like most years I will be caught in the dilemma of what to wear for a custom. I could probably go to any store and buy something that will do the job, but that is no fun.

I came across an interesting article about how the whole Jack O’Lantern thing got started and I know it really has nothing to do with poker, but I thought I would share it anyway. I found the story on a site called <A HREF="http://www.halloween-ideas.net/halloween-history-legends/halloween-history-legends.html"TARGET="_blank">Halloween Ideas.

he history of the Jack O’Lantern comes from an old Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack.

Stingy Jack was a guy that everyone disliked, he liked to play tricks on everyone. He would play tricks on family, friends, his mother and even the Devil himself. One day he convinced the Devil into climbing up a tree to get a piece of fruit. Once the Devil made his way up the tree Stingy Jack lined the base of the base of the tree with crosses. While the Devil was stuck up the tree Stingy Jack made him promise that his soul would not go to Hell when he died. The Devil had little choice but to accept the deal if he was to ever get down from the cross-lined tree. Jack removed the crosses and the Devil went on his way.

Years went by and Stingy Jack finally died. He made his way to heaven and was told by Saint Peter that he was not allowed in heaven because he lead a worthless life and was cruel and miserable to those around him. It was at this point he ventured to hell and meet up with the devil. The kept his promise and would not let Stingy Jack into hell. It was at this point Jack realized there was no where for him to go, he was stuck in the darkness between heaven and hell and would wonder there forever. When Stingy Jack was asked to leave by the Devil he said he could not because he had no light to use on his way. The Devil reached below and grabbed a burning ember from the flames of Hell and threw it towards the recently deceased man.

During Stinky Jack’s life he quite enjoyed turnips and would often steal one to eat when he got the chance. Realizing the ember was much too hot to carry in his hands Jack’s craved out the turnip he had and placed the ember inside to light his path.

Stinky Jack began his journey of walking the earth with his Jack O’Lantern with no final resting spot.

On Hallow’s eve the Irish hollowed out turnips, potatoes and other vegetables and placed a candle inside. There original Jack O’Laterns were used to keep away any evil sprits, like that of Stinky Jack. The tradition came to North America with the rush of Irish immigrates in the 1800’s and still exists today.

Have a great Halloween everybody

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a good movie

I just watched the movie The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, before I watched it I had some friends tell me it was really not that great of a movie, but I have to say I really liked it.

One thing that’s really cool about the movie is the fact that most of the creatures in the movie are actually people in customs, not the usual CGI.

The story is basically about this average guy hitchhiking across the Galaxy with his alien friend after the world is blown up to make way for a space highway. Sounds like a normal day, right?

The main character of Arthur Dent is played by Martin Freeman. He was in the British show the Office, which is a really great show if you like English humor.

Those of you who saw the movie probably enjoyed the singing dolphins, for those of you who have seen the flick let me explain. According to the movie dolphins are actually much smarter than us humans and they have been trying to warn us humans about Earth’s upcoming doom. They try to spread the message by performing tricks like jumping through hoops and of course there is a great musical number with the dolphins.

To make a long story short if you get the chance you should watch The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, it was funny and interesting at the same time. It’s definitely worth renting on DVD.

Celebrities That Should Not Play Poker

I have recently added some webpages to Celebrity Poker Party under the Celebrity Poker Players pages. She said she wanted to create a dynamic salon for opinions that could "expand the dialogue to more than just one side of the political spectrum." Huffington is an author, newspaper columnist, radio commentator, and television fixture. Huffington now plans on upping her exposure with another venture — and inviting 300 of her big-name friends and associates along for the party to post on the group blog.

Web journalists and commentators anticipating the planned May 9 launch said they were impressed with the stature of the participants Huffington signed on to write for the website (www.huffingtonpost.com) — including newsman Walter Cronkite, music mogul David Geffen, former Sen. Gary Hart, writer David Mamet, attorney Vernon E. Jordan Jr. and novelist Norman Mailer. "It's creating a new environment that is not really like traditional blogging," said Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism. "Is this a new kind of communication: a unique, elite blog-salon? Or is this just Arianna Huffington trying to find another career? We don't know yet."

Huffington, 54, began supplementing her syndicated newspaper column about a year ago with a Web log, or blog. She said at the time that the form was "the greatest breakthrough in popular journalism since Tom Paine broke onto the scene," referring to the American Revolution-era writer. In her proposed inaugural column, she calls the Huffington Post an "innovative group blog where some of this country's most creative minds will weigh in on topics great and small, political and cultural, important or just plain entertaining."

Arianna Huffington will maintain her Los Angeles base, with a paid seven-member staff in New York drawing together material for a continuing news feed that will supplement the unpaid commentaries.

Celebrity Poker Player Biography

Tim Busfield, Celebrity Poker Player Biography
Tim Busfield attended school in East Lansing, Michigan and has a sister named Julia. Tim Busfield had a son with his first wife named Wilson Busfield.
